How to flight your wedges
Have you ever played with a really good golfer and you feel it’s made you play better? It’s a funny yet welcome sensation, as if being around someone who’s game is in-form has a knock-on effect and makes you feel more in control of how you strike the ball yourself.
There’s a lot that can be said from watching and studying how the pros handle their wedge shots around championship courses. Today we want to give you a better understanding of how the pros flight their wedges to gain more control over their short game, and help you consider how you can be more tactical around the greens yourself.
Greatness on display

It’s seriously impressive how the pros manage to shoot as low as they do, especially considering the pressure of having all the eyes on them too. If you’re within earshot of one of the best in the world teeing off, it can sound like a bullet being fired from a gun, but it’s around the greens that you really want to study their game.
Having a tricky shot lined up can be enough to throw you off your game, but the elite players have a whole arsenal of approaches at their disposal ready to execute as they see fit. You’ll notice when you watch them how they often ‘flight’ their wedges, opting for a more controlled ball flight to leave their ball in the best position on the green. So how can this be achieved?
Flighting your wedges
The ability to flight your wedges is just as it sounds, having the finesse and expertise to strike a lower, more controlled shot and putting max spin on the ball so that it comes to rest where you want it to rather than scooping the ball up and hoping for the best.
Naturally, before you even set up to the ball, you’re going to want to envision your perfect pitch shot. There’s a misconception that the ideal wedge shot is all about getting plenty of loft, hitting the ball high, and it coming down to rest serenely by the flag.
Flighting your wedges has a lot more direction involved. When pros are faced with a pitch shot 50-100 yards out from the green, they’ll be wanting to control their height. They’ll strike a low shot with a very measured back swing that’ll bounce once onto the green then spin towards the target.
